Then Opposition Leader Tony Abbott meets Venerable Abbot Shi Yongxin, accompanied by Shoalhaven Mayor Joanna Gash and her deputy John Wells in 2012.A bank cheque for $4,162, 723.99 will be handed to Shoalhaven Mayor Joanna Gash by Abbot Shi Yongxin at 3.30pm on Monday afternoon – the day the deadline was set to call in the mortgage in the event the money for the purchase of Comberton Grange was not forthcoming.
Cr Gash said she had received a text message about the final payment, which includes rates and interest payments, on Monday morning.
“I’ve never doubted the Abbot. In discussions over the weekend he saidhe had been very concerned about the animosity about the payment and so had decided to present the cheque in person.
“I am absolutely excited about the prospect of the Shaolin temple and am thrilled the Abbot can come and present the cheque himself.”
Cr Gash took aim at critics of the sale process, which made headlines when one of the cheques for the sale of the land was dishonoured.
“I think the people who have ridiculed council and the Shaolin over this will take a second look at themselves and learn to have a bit of faith.”
